Explosions, Static, and Ice

So this week was an interesting, full of many different things happening. On Monday was my first O-Chem 2 Lab. It was all going so good and then somewhere near the middle of the experiment I needed to transfer the chemicals to a beaker filled with cold water. In order to transfer things I picked up the chemicals with a pippet. As I was picking the pipet up I was moving slowly so as to not spill everywhere.
Well... it turns out that I ended up spilling everywhere anyway! The liquid was still expanding so the instant I pulled the pipet out of the container with the liquid in the pipet the liquid went shooting ("Exploding")out, nearly (like literally by almost 1/16 of an inch) missed the guy behind me and landed on the floor. Luckily none of the materials we were working with were toxic, because it did get on my hands as well. I found out that it does make quite a stain though! If you look one picture below you will see my wonderful master piece that will forever grace the floor of the O-Chem Lab. Thankfully I did not need to start my lab all over again, I did have enough chemical left over to still finish the rest of the experiment.

In my physics class we are learning about electrical fields and how they affect a electrical point and other electrical fields. As part of this day my teacher brought in a machine that was trying to show us how conductors worked. The metal sphere on the top is supposed to have all the charges collecting on the outside of the sphere which makes it have a lot of static. You can't really see it here but when he put the wig looking thing on top of it, each piece was supposed to stick out like a crazy hair-dew, it didn't work all that great, but it was still pretty awesome!

On Thursday my O-Chem teacher told us that if we went to this presentation for the chemistry society then she would give us an extra credit point on our test, I took that and So I went to this presentation. It was a professor from BYU Provo, he was talking about some research he was doing to try to get something to make alcohol that does not usually do that., and then something to make nonreactive metals react. So that was an experience for me, he was really excited about the research they had done.

Then this picture is not really much to see, but it is supposed to remind me to tell all of you I have joined the Pre-med society! We have not had anything other than an opening social where we talked about what it is and what it does, and then signed up/voted for positions in the society. The adviser for people who want to go to the medical route also gave a presentation letting everyone know what it is that we need to be doing in order to get into medical or DO school. I am excited to see what this semester will bring.

We have been having some cold weather up here in Idaho! When I first got here it was negative 30 with the wind chill. It is now about 0 degrees out. Yesterday I was officially able to tell that I have acclamated to the climate. It was 16 degrees out and all I was wearing was a thin sweater on top of my clothes and I was only a little bit chilly. I still like my apartment warm though. So for your viewing pleasure here is a picture of the Snow/Ice that has happened to the fountain/river/lake on campus. The picture does not do it justice, it is really beautiful.

Then lastly, My apartment is doing sunday dinners together. One of the girls is making sloppy joes for dinner so I made the buns to put the filling in. They took FOREVER to make (like about 6 hours) because they had to rise like 5 times, but they turned out really good. I have never made this recipie before but I am liking it.

Other than those few things, life is going good. School continues and I am getting into the grove again (slowly). I am enjoying my classes and learning a lot. I have really good teachers this semester and I am looking forward to what it is going to bring. I hope all of you are doing well and being safe in your daily lives.
Much love,
Tesia
